A retrospective study of green infrastructure for alleviating urban waterlogging—A case study of Sponge City retrofit in Jiangbinxincun NO.2 Neighborhood of Zhenjiang City,Jiangsu Province

    • Since the implementation of Sponge City construction in China, there has been vigorous debate on whether green infrastructure (GI) can alleviate urban floods caused by extreme storm events, but there are few practical cases. This paper provides an example of applying low impact development(LID) approach to plan and design the redevelopment of old residential areas to alleviate urban floods. It also discusses how to transform an old and ultra-dense low- income community into one that is resilient to climate change. The main conclusions of this paper include: waterlogging control should be considered from the beginning when designing GI; try to mimic the pre-development hydrological characteristics of the site; residents should be communicated about maintenance from the beginning;the performance of GI facilities should be continuously monitored.
